Let me throw something at you for a minute.
These weekly outfit roundups seem a bit lengthy and blasé to me. I’m not sure how you feel, but I feel very uninspired when putting them together.
I think a large part of the reason is that I want to cover so much ground in one post that I either make them too wordy, or I don’t put that as much into them as I’d like for fear of them becoming a novel.
But I like the idea of sharing real life outfits with you, and I like a slightly more informal approach to things.
So I was thinking of separating the outfits into their own separate blog posts.
If you’ve been reading for awhile, then you’ll remember the six months where I attempted to do a daily outfit post on here.
I really enjoyed that format, but it ended up failing because a.) it centered around my capsule wardrobe and I was ready to be done with such a structured approach to my closet, b.) I shot all of the outfits in advance and I felt really hemmed in by having everything so planned out… I realize now how much I like to have freedom to post with some amount of spontaneity, and c.) I felt like I HAD to only talk about style… and I don’t always want to talk about style.
So I’m going to do a trial run of posting each outfit in it’s own post, but I’m going to hold to a very loose structure with it.
Some weeks there may be four outfits, some weeks only one. It’ll really just depend on what is going on in my life that week.
And I’ll talk about whatever’s on my mind that day. So you’ll get a lot more real time Karin than ever before 🙂
Because if I’m being truthful with you, now that Kit is no longer napping in the afternoon, it’s getting harder to fit blogging in. I’m hoping this will take some of the pressure off of creating these lengthy roundups, and instead allow for more to the point, individualized outfit posts.
We’ll see.
I wish I could be that blogger who has found her sweet spot, and never changes things on her readers, but, well… I’m just like you. I’m a mom who is trying to fit everything in, and not always doing it very well. So with each new season, I’m just learning that being willing to adapt is the only way this blog will keep moving forward.
I hope you understand!
And this may end up failing miserably, in which case we’ll adapt again!
So this will be my last outfit roundup for awhile. Starting next week I’ll try out the new format and we’ll see how it goes!
Day One: Smart and Casual
Outfit details:
This is a pretty basic outfit as far as outfits go. Usually with this combo I wear my tennis shoes, but I wanted to mix it up a bit so I went for my glove flats from Everlane (see review here). I like how the cream and white turned out, but I’ll admit I was a bit cold in these shoes. Still, the overall structure of this outfit is exactly what I like to wear on an average day. It’s easy, I can move around in it, but it looks more pulled together than yoga gear. I can’t wait for a restock of these sweatshirts for your sake because it’s the nicest sweatshirt I’ve ever owned. They still have them in limited sizes, but word on the street is that more are coming this spring.
Clothing shown:
Tradlands Sweatshirt c/o (TTS. limited sizes available. similar, less expensive version here)
Everlane Jeans (see Everlane denim guide here)
Everlane Flats c/o (see review here)
Baggu Purse (not available in this color, but similar colors linked)
Day Two: Vintage for the Win
Outfit details:
This outfit is like the warmer, cozier cousin to yesterdays outfit. After dealing with frozen feet the entire day before I decided to wear my warmest boots (well, not counting the pair of UGGS I bought in college and still own… yes I still wear them, but only when the temps reach the negative 20’s) with some good wool socks underneath. These jeans are vintage jeans (see my vintage denim guide here) that I found in the little boys section, and I seriously adore them. They are everything jeans should be in my opinion. They’re cool, fit like they were meant for me, and have the perfect wash. I just feel really good every time I wear them. Do you have a pair of jeans like that? It’s magic I tell you!
Clothing Shown:
Everlane sweater
Denim: vintage.
Barrette: thrifted.
Day Three: Understated Statements
Outfit Details:
I’ve been back on the vintage denim train as of lately. I don’t know why, but I’ve rediscovered my love for that vintage look. These are a pair of early-mid nineties boot cut jeans that make me really happy. I just love what they do for an outfit. You know how much I love Doen by now (see last week’s roundup), and this “rose” top is no different. It’s such a lovely cut, and the material is so nice. I love it paired with these boot cut jeans and mary jeans. It’s a really easy outfit, but it looks vintage and cool (in my humble opinion).
Clothing Shown:
Doen top (older print, similar linked)
Denim: vintage.
Doen flats (limited sizes available)
Kit’s dress is the Wiksten Smock and her tights are from the Little Collective
Day Four: the Perfect Piece a.k.a. the Wiksten Haori
Outfit details:
Ah, the much buzzed about Wiksten Haori. If you saw my 2019 top nine post then you know I have plans to make another one of these. I do really love this one, but if you look close the fabric is really not that nice. I made it from practice fabric (see my top nine post for tips on how to find practice fabric), and liked it well enough to wear it, but I’m excited to make one from a fabric that will drape better, and just feel nicer to wear. I’ve also been getting a ton of wear out of this KOTN long sleeve tee. If you’re in the market, I really can’t recommend this one enough. It goes with so much in my closet!
Clothing Shown:
Wiksten Haori (made with thrifted fabric. Size down if making your own)
KOTN tee (TTS)
And there you have it… my final outfit roundup for a while! We’ll see how the new format lasts, and if you’re like “screw you Karin and all of your changes! I need consistency in my life!” I won’t hold it against you.
Until next time,
Karin
I actually really like the casual approach (because I get it!) To the outfit posts. Kind of like an IG post but ability to chat more maybe? Anyway, I’ve enjoyed watching your style change and ebb and flow over the last few years I’ve gotten to know you. Several outfits remind me of something my cool mom would have worn, and that’s a big compliment to me ❤️
Thank you Sarah! Your never ending support means so much to me. And after everything you’ve said about your mom, I kind of want to meet her ha!
I’m very new to your blog and am really enjoying your WIAW posts. But I totally get it and you have to do what works best for you. I think blogs come across as much more authentic when the author is actually being authentic (imagine that!). For now I will scroll through all the archives. All the best for a fabulous 2019 x
Thank you Mirella! I’m glad you found me (and commented so I could get to know you!), and I appreciate the support!
Here’s a Wiksten Haori question for you: what types of fabrics do you think are best? I have plans to make one using some kantha stitched cotton but you mention drape and it is certainly not a fabric with a fluid drape. Tips? Should I nix my plans?
I think it would do okay in kantha cotton, but it would probably fit more like a jacket and less like a drapey cardigan. You should browse through the wiksten haori hashtag on Instagram, there are a ton of different iterations in different fabrics. It’ll probably give you a better idea!
