How to Style Balloon Jeans: My Favorite Pair + How I’m Wearing Them

The bag is from Polene.

Oh man you guys! Balloon jeans. You either love ’em or HATE ’em… like passionately hate them ha! I mean I get it. They are definitely a look. But that’s exactly why I like them! In a sea of jeans its FUN to make a statement every now and then. Now with that said, I do think you can go overboard with statement pieces like balloon jeans. If you go TOO far you can end up looking like you are wearing a costume. So that’s where this post comes in!

My biggest tip? If you want the statement piece to shine (i.e. the balloon jeans), keep everything else basic and neutral. If you balance everything out you’re left with a really cool outfit instead of an “I’m trying too hard” outfit. I kept things really simple with my styling and stuck with classic shapes, minimal shoes, and muted colors – it makes the fun, trendy shape of the jeans appear timeless. Win!

Tee is from AYR (color is Rose Quartz). I linked an affordable option above. Sandal review here.

In regards to the jeans, they are SO nice! The denim is nice and thick, but it’s very stretchy so they are super comfy. They are a high rise with a nice crop, and the balloon isn’t super crazy. They kind of look and feel like a good pair of vintage jeans actually. I like that they kept the stitching and button at the fly very simple to balance out the shape of the jeans. I also love that they are more fitted at the hips, and that the extra room hits at the thigh – It makes the fit around the butt and hips SO good. They run pretty big so I’d size down a full size! I typically wear a 26 in Madewell denim and I have these in a 25 (the sales lady I bought them from said she noticed everyone was sizing down in them so it sounds like that’s a universal thing).

I hope what you take from this post is to not be afraid of branching out a little in your style! You should always feel good (and comfortable) in your clothes, but don’t write things off just because you assume they are too “out there.” These jeans are a really fun way to spice things up a bit, and I’d definitely recommend giving them a try! And if you’re not quite sure this pair is for you check out how I styled the Everlane version of the balloon jean here.

Let me know if you’d be willing to give them a try in the comments below!

Until next time,

Karin

Have the madewell ones and they are now my go to jeans, so comfortable yet feel a little more pulled together.

I just got the Madewell balloon jeans. Any ideas on how to wear them in cold weather?

I’d wear them with socks and sneakers or with a pair of boots that have a fitted ankle! On top I’d do a turtleneck or more cropped sweater.
