Yup. Still hot here! Piggy backing on Monday’s post, I’m so glad that I thought to include a handful of cooler weather clothing in this capsule wardrobe. I’m definitely a big baby about weather and I get a little whiny when I’m too hot or too cold (I know… Diva status).
You know what? I’m learning that the biggest factor that makes a capsule wardrobe “work” is versatility. I know you have heard me use that word quite a bit since I started this blog, but it’s just because you need to have a closet full of individual pieces that will work with as many other pieces as possible. When planning this fall capsule, I found it helpful to analyze each piece before I included it and to make sure that it would work with at least three other pieces in my closet. This skirt is a great example. I love that it can be dressed down like it is here, but paired with some of the other pieces in my closet it can be dressed up. This shirt on the other hand… The bold pattern (Ok. Bold for me.) makes it a little less versatile. And that brings me to my other point. Recently I was helping a friend pack up her clothes for a temporary move to New York (i.e. she could only bring a limited amount of clothing) and me being the “expert” that I am kept pushing versatility on her. Finally she looked at me and said something like, “but I don’t want to bring only versatile pieces. Some are just for fun.” I realized that she’s absolutely right! While a majority of your closet should be versatile, it’s okay to include that fancy leopard print skirt (maybe for my winter capsule??) if you absolutely love it. One of the biggest factors of a capsule wardrobe that I think people forget is that you should love every piece in your closet and so it’s okay to include items simply because they make you feel like a bombshell. What about you? Do you disagree with me and only include versatile pieces? Or do you agree and include pieces that are more fun? If you do, I’d love to hear what pieces you have that are less practical. Let me know in the comments below!
Until next time,

Karin, for me at least, a capsule wardrobe means redefining versatility. Yes, you need basic pieces that are versatile – a good basic tee, a great pair of jeans, a classic breton stripe, a cozy sweater. Those pieces ARE inherently versatile in a multi-season, multi-purpose way, BUT they’re only truly versatile if you loooooooove them. (Heck, I purged a lot of “versatile” pieces that I just didn’t wear!) But once you looooooooove what you’ve got, the question is whether the “fun” pieces aren’t versatile in the end, right? I bet that leopard skirt you love would rock with a denim shirt or jacket and booties. And with a graphic tee and chucks. And with a turtleneck sweater and tall boots. And with a breton stripe and flats. And…that sounds pretty versatile to me! Which, I think?, is what takes a capsule wardrobe from serviceable to fantastic.
Also? That first shot is FUN!!! 🙂
Those are some GREAT points Maggie! And after you listed out all of those ways that you can wear a leopard skirt, it’s making me consider getting one even more for my winter capsule. 🙂 And thanks!! My hubby took these pictures and I feel a little more comfortable being goofy with him than with my regular photographers. 🙂
Cute bag!!!
Thank you!!
Having a capsule wardrobe is something I do aspire to do. Thank you for providing inspiration.
You’re welcome!
How cute are you, I love that first pic! I have no idea if I would succeed at a capsule wardrobe. I feel like I would fail miserably, lol.
Haha! You don’t know until you try right?? 😉
Oh and thank you! xoxo
So cute Karin! I love this look, very euro 😉
Thanks Andrea!
I *LOVE* this look! You look amazing!!!!
Thank you m’am!!
I think one or two non-versatile pieces are fine. The most important thing is to LOVE and WEAR all the pieces in your capsule. Love this look on you! 🙂
Thanks Rebecca! That’s what I’m realizing more and more. It just makes me wonder how things will change as I continue!
I am 30 and I am just now learning that quality versatile pieces are better than cheap trendy pieces. Love this and you have a great sense of style.
Thank you Jessica! I definitely didn’t start looking for quality until I was in my 30’s either. It’s an evolution for sure!
