This past week we went to the Great Minnesota Get Together (a.k.a the State Fair). We LOVE the State Fair! I mean what’s not to love about fried food on a stick?! But why is it that it is always SO HOT here in Minnesota the week of the State Fair? Which is unfortunate for me because I switched to my fall capsule on September 1st. You may wonder why I didn’t wait until the weather got cooler and that’s actually a really good question.  The honest answer is that I don’t really know why I didn’t wait. I mean I knew I had a September 1st launch date that I had set for myself back when I started in June and so that’s what I did, but I don’t regret switching because it is forcing me to get creative. I realized that I had lost some of the fun of dressing with my summer capsule because it was super safe. I know there are some proponents of capsule wardrobes that herald it because it takes the creativity out of dressing and that’s great! But that’s just not me. I’m one of those people that really enjoys the artistic element of dressing and I realized that I need to have pieces that will not only be functional, but fun to work with! I really think I did a great job of doing that with my current capsule. So this time I was a lot more intentional about including pieces that would seamlessly work no matter the weather.  The best examples? Tank tops that I can wear plain now, but under cardigans later. Or skirts that I can wear with flats now, but wear with my riding boots later. Obviously its easier to do this during the colder months because of layering, but you feel me.

Ok. So that’s all well and good, but when it’s 90 degrees outside with 90% humidity you just need some cooler clothing. So this is what I decided to do: I left out one pair of sandals and one pair of shorts that I can intermix with my fall capsule clothing. Once the weather cools down for good, I’ll pack ’em up.  Could I have just included them in my actual capsule? Probably. But it seemed silly to include something that I will use for maybe one or two weeks. I’m cool with having some transition clothing that can be put in storage as soon as it’s done being useful.  What about you? What do you do when you are transitioning capsules? Do you just wait for the weather to turn? Or do you stick with a date and then just make it work? I would love to hear tips and tricks for what you’ve done that has worked well.  Let me know in the comments below!

I still have never been to the MN State Fair! I swear, I say every year we’re going to go and something always happens and we’re stuck in boring Superior, WI. I love your black dress!

We hope to go to the MN state fair in a few years, here it’s great!! By the way I’ll have to look up through your past posts to see the capsule posts. I usually just swap clothes out in the different seasons.

It really is! It definitely would help clarify this post to see some of the others. I would suggest starting with the How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe and Guidelines pages at the top of the blog. 🙂

I hate to be hot as well! I’m really hoping we can get past this hot spell… it’s not normally this hot in September!
