Flexibility and Adaptibility

So here’s a funny story:  last weekend we tried to take Kit camping on her very first camping excursion ever.  David and I are big campers and have done it many times before so we were supremely confident that it was going to go GREAT. Do you see where this is going?  Yeah we ended up leaving at 11:00 at night and driving home.  She had done great all night… up until bedtime. Kit just WOULD NOT fall asleep so at about 10:30 we decided to take her out of the Pack and Play and try to co sleep with her hoping that it would help.  Nope.  She then alternated from rolling back and forth between David and I giggling and trying to grab our noses to emotional scream crying. It got to the point where we realized that we had to leave out of respect for the other campers.  Having a baby changes things doesn’t it!? My nice, predictable life just isn’t that way anymore.  Normally Kit is the happiest baby, but in that moment she just chose not to be (to be fair, it was HOT with 90% humidity, so I think the poor thing just couldn’t cool down).  I’m realizing more and more that these babies actually have their own feelings and wills!! Weird right??! Having Kit has taught me that life can’t always be predictable and that flexibility and adaptibility are important qualities (that doesn’t mean I don’t believe in boundaries and structure ha!).  This can pretty much apply to anything in life, but especially your capsule wardrobe.  Rigidity is rarely enjoyable and allowing yourself to relax and just enjoy the ride will make things so much more fun! I realize that I may have guidelines for how my capsule should go, but life isn’t always so cut and dry and it’s important, with anything that you’re doing, to be able to adapt to life’s ebbs and flows.

All that to say, we were planning on going into Stillwater (this cute little town on the river, which was really close to our campsite) the following day, but that obviously didn’t happen.  So we headed back on Labor Day and had a really good time poking our heads in all of the cute antique stores and boutiques.  Kit had her first pony ride and her first little bite of ice cream! Needless to say, that trip went much better than the first one!

Has anyone else had a camping trip go wrong? Or really anything else? It would make me feel ten times better to hear your stories. ๐Ÿ™‚ Let me know in the comments below!

Until next time,

Oh no, sorry that your camping trip did not work out! But to make you feel better, I can tell you that pretty much any and all family outings never go to according to plan. There is always something that does wrong, or someone who isn’t happy! Such is life! Best is when I start yelling: We are doing this, and you better have fun!!! ๐Ÿ˜‰

I love Stillwater! I haven’t been there in years, but the last time I went we had such a great time just walking around. Such a pretty area.

It really is so pretty! I love all of the little towns along the river. Another favorite of ours is Taylor’s Falls. Especially for hiking!

I haven’t camped much in my life. Every single trip has been a disaster, which is probably why I haven’t tried it again! The first time we took our 4 month old twins to Estes Park. The alternated screaming the entire night. We were supposed to stay 5 nights, but only stayed 1 before we turned around and headed the 9 hours back home to Nebraska! The last time I camped I was 8 months pregnant and my air bed went flat. No explanation is needed why THAT was so horrible! ๐Ÿ™‚ Stillwater reminds me of all the little towns I grew up with back in NE….looks like a fun day! Sorry camping was a flop, but I bet when Kit gets a little older she will love it!

Oh no! You know what they say… misery loves company and I am definitely feeling better after seeing that this has happened to other people!! I camped when I was seven months pregnant so I can’t imagine how uncomfortable you must have been. I’m sure she will. Generally we try to laugh when things go wrong because you really can’t control it!

I’m convinced that children exist to prove to adults that we have literally NO IDEA WHAT WE ARE DOING on any (and every) given day. A maddening and liberating fact from this Mama of 4. And I <3 the grey dress and chucks ensemble!

Oh my goodness isn’t that the truth??? Haha! I was such an expert before I had kids!! Thanks for the encouragement. ๐Ÿ™‚ And thank you!

Any kind of trip with kids is hard. They are off their routine, and never sleep good in a strange bed. We usually limit our stays to one night because that’s all we can take with three boys smooshed in the bed with us.

Oh man! Three boys smooshed in a bed does not sound fun! ๐Ÿ™‚ I so appreciate everyone’s encouragement. I had a feeling there were others out there that had experienced similar experiences, but it always helps to know who you are in solidarity with. ๐Ÿ™‚

I am terrible when it comes to being flexible – I want everything to be my way or the highway with no wiggle room. It’s one of the reasons why I know I can’t have kids right now, I just can’t adapt!

I’m hopefully going to Stillwater for my birthday on Wednesday if the weather holds up!

Ugh… I really struggle with it too! I just really like control. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I felt the same way about having kids which is why I waited until I did to have kids. Have fun!! And early Happy Birthday!
