This is what happens when your husband is the photographer. 😉

You are all probably aware by now that I’m not naturally a risk taker.

And I’ve talked in previous posts about how important it is to understand your own personal style in order to be successful at a Capsule Wardrobe lifestyle.

I really do believe that.

BUT.

I also think that it is important to take risks with your clothing.

My first and second capsules were very safe.

I was so scared of including something that I wouldn’t end up wearing often that I only included clothing items that I was ABSOLUTELY sure of.

And you know what? I ended up getting pretty bored with my closet.

I mean, don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed what I included, but as I lived with each capsule I ended up getting less and less inspired by my clothing.

By the end of the three months, I couldn’t wait to move on to my next capsule.

Maybe that’s just human nature?

But I would like to get to a point where I’m reluctant to move on to my next capsule.

The ONE risk that I did end up with in my fall capsule was my red shoes.

And I have worn them over, and over, and over.

You know what that taught me?

Risk isn’t always bad.

So for my winter capsule I included more risk: my red jacket, my vest, this hat I’m wearing, and a few others.

And while I’m not getting as much use out of them as my striped tee or gray cardigan, they keep me SO interested in my capsule.

I think the key is to have a healthy balance of safe and risk.

And isn’t that just life? Balance in everything.

What sort of fashion risks have you taken? Color, material, cut? Let me know in the comments below!

Until next time,

Hey! I finally made my way to your blog after following you in Instagram. Digging your style! I love the pops of color in your capsule wardrobe. I did the same with my first capsules and ended up super bored. For this Winter capsule I added a tulle and a faux leather skirt. Both in black (so still realtively safe) but they create a different silhouette than my other items. So far I love them! And I plan to re-use them for my Spring capsule.

Hey Marloes! So glad you made it over here. 🙂 And thank you! A tulle and faux leather skirt are the perfect ways to mix up your capsule! Still somewhat versatile, but fun!

I am so glad I found this blog! I don’t know how to dress myself. It’s all so overwhelming but I am looking forward to reading your blog and learning about capsule wardrobe.

Love those red shoes! Winter typically means gray and black for me but I’ve started adding more color – emerald green, red and I’m being more daring with my jewelry pieces rather than the few I rotated!

Emerald green is so pretty! I kind of want to pick up a few pieces now that I have brown hair… maybe for my summer capsule. Having fun with jewelry is the perfect way to compliment a capsule wardrobe!

My sister is so good about having fun bright colors with her accessories, especially her shoes! I’m always so jealous because they’re super cute but then when it comes to me at the store getting new shoes, I just go to the “safe” options that will “match everything.” I definitely want to get more risky with my fashion!

My sister is the same way Katie! She’s a fashion stylist though so it’s her job to take risks. 🙂 I think if you start with one or two pieces you’re less set up to regret the risk.

I love the red accents! I’ve been trying to be a little more confident, a little riskier with my choices. Stitch Fix has been a really great way to push me out of my comfort zone and get me to try on things I might not normally have tried.

Thank you! Stitch Fix is perfect for trying new styles! There’s less “risk” in that you can try on something without having to buy it. Great idea!

I truly love your stylish ways! That cozy sweater looks fabulous over leggings. And you really rock that red hat. My goal for 2016 is to have an “expanded” capsule wardrobe for each season. I am not afraid to storm my closet and donate, donate, donate, and then start fresh with a minimized new collection. Thanks for your wardrobe inspiration!

Dressing is so hard for me. I’m not that very fashions and my favorite color is white! I can be very boring by wearing the same ugly tired outfit But lately I’ve been experimenting with brown and blush shades and I’m loving it. ❤️❤️

White can be so light and classic! And you can add any accessory to it and make it unique. 🙂 Brown and Blush are perfect ways of getting your feet wet! Still fun, but not crazy!

That whole outfit is SO adorable. Taking risks with my wardrobe is hard, especially when I’m still trying to figure out what my personal style really is. I tend to stick with lots of greys and muted hues, but those red shoes are making me swoon a little bit. 🙂

Love love love the black, white, and red!

I find that with fashion, I tend to waffle between being completely disinterested and wanting to wear my jeans and t-shirts OR being very bold with my choices… Red and pink are totally my colors, I love shirts that show cleavage, I have a pair of pink glitter sneakers, I love vintage dresses.

Love it! When I was scrolling the pictures I loved the red pops of color in your outfit, so I smiled when I read your post. Great choices! I love your style. 🙂

My goodness, aren’t you darling! The red suits you! To me, it screams confidence and total approachability. I don’t make enough risks in my wardrobe. But this makes me want to!

Such a cute outfit! I think that a bold color choice is always something that makes you feel a little bit more awesome or just gives you some sort of kick in the spirit you need to be fierce. You are rocking that look!

I had no idea what a capsule wardrobe is and have found out that I basically do that. Mostly because I like to keep a 40s look and there aren’t many places to buy clothes that fit that aesthetic for a larger woman. It’s definitely helpful when getting ready to run out the door if you’ve only got 9 dresses to choose from, though!

I definitely agree with risk taking. Once again, 40s wardrobe so I’m kind of a crazy pants when it comes to what I wear but I also realize that most people really aren’t. And that’s cool, we all know where our comfort zone is. I do think balance is key if balance is your thing but never force yourself to wear something that makes you feel uncomfy or not like ‘you’ unless you want to!

I think your style is GORGEOUS!
