Meet the Alternates: My Hidden Capsule Items

Last Monday, I shared about the capsule within my capsule.

On that post the lovely Kat shared that she even takes it a step further. She has a few items that she keeps in her closet year round that she pulls in from time to time simply because she loves them, but doesn’t wear them often enough to justify putting them in her capsule.

I love that idea! For me, my motivation to keep a few pieces in the back corner is more because of the varied temperatures here in Minnesota and weight fluctuations.

So today, I thought I would share with you, what I’m going to fondly call, the alternates.

It’s really nothing that exciting really, but these three pieces are clothing items that I will most likely swap into my wardrobe before the end of the spring season due to the above mentioned variables.

What do you think? Do you have alternates in your capsule wardrobes? What are they?

Until next time,

Signature

Karin, you’re such a sweetheart for mentioning me in the post! Thank you!
Lately I’ve been having to remind myself to keep being intentional and get back to what matters. Sometimes we hit a rough patch. So last week I opened up some boxes of older clothing and summer clothing and I’m slowly saying goodbye to those sentimental pieces I haven’t got rid of the first time around (or the second time around). I’m giving myself till the end of summer to purge even more…
I love your sandals and I’m looking forward to see them in action, as well as the black denim! It looks so comfortable. The two might even work well together!
    Have a wonderful Monday,
    xo Kat

You’re welcome Kat! You definitely inspired me! I do this every time I do a new capsule. There are pieces that just take a bit longer to let go of. Sometimes I even know that I will eventually get rid of them, but I still have to hang on to them for some reason.

This sounds like a really neat idea. I have a few items in the back of my head that I couldn’t justify adding to my capsule, but if I want to wear them once or twice during the season, why not?!?
I can imagine that the weather is a factor in favor of alternates. For me, I don’t really worry about the weather much, because in my 6-month capsule I have pieces that are great for pretty much anything spring and summer weather has to offer… ๐Ÿ™‚

Exactly! There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. I’m actually thinking of moving to a two season capsule so I would imagine that it WOULD be a lot easier with seasons.

Missouri weather also is unpredictable. 70 one day 40 the next, so I too chose to expand my capsule to include a shelf of items I call my alternatives. A year round cardigan, a long light weight crochet duster, and black leggings. I like that I don’t have to fit myself into one box, but that I really get to choose items in my capsule that work for me. This is is my first ever capsule (?) so it will be really interesting to see how things play out over the next year. Total items: 47 including my alternates for spring/summer transition. Keep the inspirations coming!!

Nope. If I happen to dig it out of my closet, it may or may not be a surprise. I love those sandals though.

These look like great basics that you can add in as the weather permits. I have to admit that the idea of limiting myself to a capsule for all my outfits is scary. But I’m also a little jealous of everyone who has done it and loves it. – Katy
