Winter 2015 Capsule Wardrobe Recap

Can you believe it? Spring is almost upon us! And with the arrival of spring comes a new capsule and a recap of my winter 2015 capsule wardrobe. I had mentioned previously that I wasn’t quite ready for my spring capsule. And while that was true when I wrote it, all of a sudden I was just… ready (it doesn’t hurt that it’s supposed to be in the 50’s this week).

SO I’ve decided to wrap up my winter capsule and start curating my spring capsule. I’ll still be doing another week of winter outfits, and then next Monday I’ll reveal my capsule!

To be honest, this has been my best capsule so far by a LOT… BUT I’m uber excited about my spring capsule. You guys. I think I’m finally figuring things out and I’m learning to be confident in what my TRUE style actually is and not what I think it is/think it should be. You know what that means? Happy dance!

The three things I learned this capsule were:

  1. It’s okay to be a little bit hipster. For the longest time, I have tried to disassociate myself with that word because sometimes I get annoyed with the hipster culture as a whole. That is in no way the hipsters’ fault… I just sometimes find myself wanting to reject a trend JUST because its trendy. I guess that’s the strong will in me. BUT I definitely am drawn to that style so I’m learning to embrace it. It’s silly to not dress the way that I want to just because I don’t want to associate with a trend. Silly.
  2. I like my hair and glasses because they add interest to my overall aesthetic. I’ve always worn contacts and had pretty tame hair (except for in college… you don’t want to know how many hair colors I had in college), but I’m learning that I actually really love that my bangs and glasses spice things up a bit. I think that they fit seamlessly with my wardrobe and I love that. I guess what I’m trying to say is that I feel like my overall look is a lot more cohesive than it ever has been.
  3. I really like simple, easy clothing that has a bit of an edge. I LIKE having a wardrobe full of basics and I like that I’m beginning to have a small collection of pieces that spice up those basics. This winter capsule had that formula more than my last two and I was much happier with this capsule. That’s pretty good evidence to me of it’s success.

With that said, there were some clothing items that I included that I could have done without:

  1. My flared denim. I wore these jeans zero times. Which is funny because I wore them loads during my fall capsule. I just wasn’t feeling them for some reason.
  2. Two blazers. I LOVE both of the blazers I have, but with my lifestyle I only really need one. I probably will keep my red one to wear for fancier occasions (I think it would be perfect over a LBD), but hang onto the black one for more everyday wear.
  3. Knee high boots. I’m just over that trend. Is it a trend? Either way, I wore them once and hated the way I felt the entire time I was wearing them. I ALMOST sold them before my winter capsule, but then decided to keep them because I “should” have a pair of knee high boots. But who says so? I just prefer ankle boots and I am now accepting that fact and owning my decision.

I’m really trying to streamline my spring capsule so it’s only full of pieces that I absolutely love… but you know what? Even if it’s not perfect that’s okay. I’m not here to be perfect, I’m here to be real.

I can’t wait to share it with you on Monday! I’m also finishing up a new version of my planning guides so if you’re a current subscriber be on the lookout for that. If you’re not a current subscriber, make sure to subscribe so you can get access to these free guides as well and start planning your spring capsules!

Let me know what you’ve learned this winter as well and when you’ll be starting your spring capsules!

Man, now I want to start planning my next capsule, too… πŸ˜‰ But I think I’m gonna be stuck with winter clothes for a while – it was freezing this morning!

I love that with limiting your clothes to a capsule you actually learn a lot more about your style than with a closet overflowing with clothes.

Oh bummer! It’s finally starting to warm up around here and I love it! I love that too! It seemed so counter intuitive to me until I started seeing that it’s actually true!

So good, Karin! The collage really highlights how cohesive this capsule was. And I’m loving the hipster embrace- including the leather pants from your shortlist post. Get it!!

This is exactly why I would love to start a capsule wardrobe, even if just for a couple seasons, to hone in on what my style really is. I love that you discovered so much about your personal style and what really works with your lifestyle. Great inspiration.

I love all the outfits you put together! I got all pumped up for a capsule wardrobe last year and then realized that Colorado might not be the best place for it (we have 70-degree weather one day and snow the next!). But now you’ve intrigued me again!

Also, I agree that I’m so over the over-the-knee boots. They are just too hard to wear, haha.

Thanks Rachel! Minnesota is actually pretty similar to that! I think the key is to just put together a capsule full of layers so you can adjust with the temperature. Stay tuned for my spring capsule because I built it to be much more weather versatile.

I love your style, Karin! Almost all of your outfits are combinations that I would put together myself. πŸ˜‰ When I moved to Chicago, everyone told me that I needed a pair of knee-high boots, but I knew that they just weren’t me. I used my favorite booties all winter and never had an issue with them. Like you, booties are much more my style. And always, it’s okay to be a bit hipster. πŸ˜‰ Anyway, fabulous idea for a post! I’ll have to do some of guy own capsule reflections in the future – especially as I figure out what works for my new traveling lifestyle and what doesn’t.

Thanks Cassandra! I think we do have similar style. πŸ™‚ You inspired me on a couple of my shoe choices for spring actually! I love the way you pull hipster elements into your capsule. πŸ™‚ I hope you do a post like this because I’d love to see it!

What a fun journey to share in. I’m trying to find my post baby style and break my addiction to black yoga pants. It’s not going well lol.

It’s so funny you mentioned the thing about the glasses. I just started wearing my glasses a lot and I agree that I feel like it adds to my overall look and I feel separates me a bit. I’m doing a sprink capsule wardrobe, my first one ever, so excited to see how it turns out.
