What I Wore Last Week: Featuring the Fisherman Sweater

Happy first week of 2019 everyone! It feels kind of weird to sit down and type this out because I took the last month off to focus on family.

Weird, but good. But also maybe give me grace because my fingers are a bit rusty?

Also, Kit’s not napping anymore (she stopped entirely once Santa took her pacifier away) so finding time to write these posts is getting harder and harder.

I hope to maintain consistency with my posting schedule, but well… it’s not really up to me. It’s up to the four year old ha!

She’s currently playing in her room so we’ll see how far I can get.

All that to say, I’m happy to be back, I’m happy to be not wearing dresses (I participated in dressember), and I’m hoping my toddler lets me finish this ha!

So in the interest of being speedy, let’s get to it shall we?

Side note: I removed the “where I wore it” portion from these posts because a.) half the time I don’t remember where I was on what day and b.) we go to the same places every week anyway so it seemed a bit redundant.

Day One: Dressing for Day and Night

Notes:

I wore this on a day where I knew I would have to be a bit more dressed up in the evening, but I wouldn’t have a lot of time to get changed. I think the transition worked out perfectly. The key to making a daytime outfit work quickly for evening is to swap out pieces from the same categories. Exhibit A: a long cardigan in the first look, and then a longish kimono style jacket in the second. Exhibit B: easy slip on sneakers in the first look, easy slip on heels in the second. Same base, same accessories, but things look more elevated in the second version. For those of you who work 9-5 jobs, this is a good tip to keep in mind for going out after work (says the stay at home mom ?). On another note, I just got this long sleeve tee from KOTN and I am smitten. It is SUCH a good basic, and feels much nicer than your average long sleeve tee. It has such a lovely weight to it that makes the fit so flattering. The best part? It’s ethically made, but yet it only costs $34. I’m also eyeing their fitted turtleneck.

Day Two: Doen all Over

Notes:

I wore this outfit for an all day birthday party for my three girls so I knew I wanted to be comfy. As with yesterday, I’ve been loving a simple silhouette of fitted tee with baggier/wider bottoms. These jeans are vintage Levi’s and they are just so dang comfortable. I know a lot of people struggle with finding vintage denim that fits/suits their body type, and I’ll admit, it takes a lot of trial and error… but once you do it’s magic ha! (you can also check out my vintage denim guide for lots of good tips). I got this Doen tee during their black friday sales. It had been on my list for awhile, but then I saw these flats as well and I was this close to adding them to my cart on an impulse. I’m happy to report that I stuck to the plan (and my budget), but then a few weeks ago, I found them on eBay for half the cost! It was meant to be after all. I can’t wait for warmer weather to get even more wear out of them. I love how ladylike they are, but that they easily pair with such a simple silhouette up top. I’m really into the Doen vibe right now. I think as my style continues to evolve and transition I’m realizing that the vintage feminine, but also sort of masculine vibe of Doen is my ideal aesthetic.

Day Three: Styling Brown and Black

This is a pretty monochromatic look, but I still really love it. I thrifted this vintage J. Crew sweater at the beginning of the fall season, and I love it for it’s chocolately brown color. I’m still a fan of cognac, but recently I’ve been loving more burgundy/chocolate browns. It reminds me of college when I used to wear chocolate brown and black together before it was considered okay to wear those colors together (I was a style rebel… and also a bit of a style train wreck ?). But pairing it with a light camel colored coat brings it all together and provides a nice balance to the dark tones of the base outfit. Everlane gifted me this coat to include in my holiday look book, and I’ll admit, it took me a bit of time to warm up to it… but now I’m so happy with it’s presence in my coat closet. It’s a much more masculine shape than any of my other coats, but I’ve grown to really love that about it. It pairs so nicely with such a fitted outfit underneath. Plus the benefit of a looser cut coat is that you can fit thick winter sweaters underneath with no problem. And I’ve grown to really love the little details like the drop shoulders, and the bit of gray wool peeking underneath the collar (I like to wear it with the collar up so you can see the contrast). If you are interested in this coat, a few notes that may sway you: it’s not the warmest coat in the world. For most of the world, it’ll probably serve you well. But when you live in Antarctica (cough Minnesota), it’s just not enough for our coldest days. Also, if you get it and panic thinking it doesn’t have pockets (like I may have), it DOES you just have to rip the seam to open them up.

Day Four: the Fisherman Sweater

Do you ever have those days where you are just NOT feeling jeans? This was one of those days for me. I get asked a lot if I could share more outfits featuring leggings, but honestly? I’m just not a leggings girl. I would always rather wear a pair of joggers, or a pair of pants like these from VETTA (sadly sold out at the moment). They are just as comfortable, but (in my opinion) look much more intentional. I’ve been playing around with different ways of wearing them, and I’m happy with how they turned out paired with this new fisherman sweater from Tradlands (gifted). I debated between the lovely cream color and this one, but I ultimately landed on this one because the color is just so vibrant and pretty. It pairs nicely with my closet full of neutrals. Some thoughts on this sweater for those of you interested in it: (side note: it’s on sale right now with an extra 20% off sale!)

• It runs a tad large. I got it in a small, but kind of wish I would have gone for an XS. If you like your sweaters oversized then stay with your true size, but I envisioned wearing this a bit more fitted with skirts. I expect it to shrink a bit in the wash as their sweatshirts do, and I think once it does the fit will be perfect.
• Depending on how you edit your photos, I’ve seen this shade look quite a bit different on different people, but I would say it’s pretty close to this photo. It’s very vibrant, and more pumpkin than mustard or rust.
• The hem and the cuffs are nice and loose. I like when basic crew neck sweaters are more tapered at the hem, but on a big chunky sweater I like things to be loose. It provides more versatility to wear it open over jeans or tucked in like I have it here.
• Finally, the material is nice and soft/warm: I wore it hiking, and it kept me warm (on a 40 F degree day, and under a feather coat).

Day Five: Overalls and a Baby

Notes:

First of all, any outfit is better with a cute baby. So special shout out to Ella for making this outfit next level (I’m aware I’m too old to be using such youthful slang, but I went for it anyway). I’m back on the overall train as of late. I think I just needed to figure out how I like to wear them. I was tempted to get on Pinterest and figure out if overalls were still a thing, but then I realized that I should wear them if I want to and for no other reason. So maybe they’re out? But I don’t care. I love how easy and comfortable they are and they have the ability to make a boring outfit look like you know what you’re doing. I love them with my KOTN tee, and these desert boots. Warm, comfy, and a bit fun (sometimes when I write things like that I roll my eyes at how weird it is to be a style blogger and that I’m WRITING THINGS LIKE THAT. Ha!). One final side note before I get too loopy and annoy everyone, I bought this little mini Fjallraven for Kit a few years ago, and then I stole it back because I decided I liked it more than she probably ever will ha! I’ve been carrying it a lot lately, and I’ve really fallen in love with it. It’s SO roomy, and durable. I’m kind of past the major diaper bag stage, but it’s still nice to have a backpack, and the fact that it can carry all three water bottles at the same time is a major plus.
