Our Holiday Bucket List + Eliminating Hurry this Season

I always feel like I’m chasing after the perfect Christmas season.

But every year our schedule seems to fill up.

And I feel rushed, hurried, and like my perfect Holiday is slipping through my fingers. It really bothers me.

I know there’s no such thing as perfection, but I do know that I’d like this year to be different.

Because I realized recently that it’s my fault.

There are things that are necessary (preschool, family gatherings, etc.), and then there are things I want to squeeze in.

These things are all good things. Memory making things. But what good are they if they only serve to stress me and my family out?

Ah stress. Why do I do this to myself?

So I’m saying enough. YES to memory making, but also YES to the right amount of memory making. Right?

I’m picking and choosing, and only settling on the things that will serve my family well.

Yes, we’ll have obligations, but in between those obligations we’ll have a bit of tradition with a lot of lazy enjoying of a Holiday that’s meant to be slow.

We’ll make cookies, but then we’ll take the time to enjoy those cookies without feeling the need to rush on to the next thing.

In other words, I’m getting out of my own way.

I did create a holiday bucket list for this month, but it only has five things on it:

  1. Make Christmas sugar cookies & let the girls decorate them
  2. Make a dehydrated orange garland
  3. Make hand print ornaments
  4. Visit Santa
  5. Get a tree and have a picnic dinner in front of it

That ends up being about one thing per week. Enough to make the season feel special, but not enough that I’m getting stressed with all of the preparations.

What it really comes down to is that I’m trying to eliminate hurry from this season (and also beyond this season). I want to feel calm, peaceful, energized as I walk through each day. I don’t want to feel as if I’m always chasing the next thing.

I want my girls (and eventually Gabe too) to spend countless hours playing in the snow, enjoying hot cocoa, laying under the tree, and, well, just being kids.

So yes to bucket lists, but also yes to keeping them small. And a big hearty yes to eliminating hurry from this season.

Tell me, have you mastered the art of a slow Holiday season?

Until next time,

Karin
