Discipline

Funny story about these jeans… they ALMOST didn’t make it into my capsule.  I literally pulled them out one day before I created my Summer 2015 post.  I am SO glad I did.  I’m realizing that I probably could have gotten away with just this pair of jeans for the entire summer.  The funny thing is, these jeans are one of the oldest items that I own.  They just keep giving and giving. God bless them.

Moving on… David and I were recently talking about how doing the capsule wardrobe has been teaching me so much about discipline.  What I’m realizing is that when you have discipline in one area of your life, it follows in other areas of your life.  I remember a pastor once saying “feelings follow focus.” That has stuck with me ever since because it is exactly right!  I never felt like I could accomplish this whole capsule wardrobe business until I tried it.  The more I focus on doing it the more I feel capable of it.  And now, the discipline of doing a capsule wardrobe is literally trickling down into all other areas of my life.  I’ve been eating healthier, exercising regularly, reading more… I even practiced the piano (I haven’t done that in ages)!  Is doing a capsule wardrobe a magic cure all?  Absolutely not.  Do we all need more discipline in our lives? Probably.  Whatever that looks like for you, I encourage you to pursue something that requires discipline.  It is so trans-formative to challenge yourself in that area.  What about you?  Have you ever noticed the discipline compound effect in your lives?  I’d love to hear about it!  Please let me know in the comments below.

I had a messy house. I hated it. The worst part was, I kept trying to get it under control, with little success. When we decided to put our house on the market, it all had to change! Over a couple of months, I finally sorted wat we truly use and stored the rest in the garage. Finally, even with three kids under the age of 6, my house is perpetually clean! ! And I can’t help wondering, why I hadn’t done it before. ..

It’s so hard to start the discipline process isn’t it? Nelson Mandela had a quote that I always turn to when I’m in a situation that is super overwhelming: “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” Simple, but so powerful! I figure if he could end Apartheid, I can truncate my closet. 🙂 I’m glad you were able to get your house under control!

I have also found this to be true! Ever since I started my capsule wardrobe, I’ve also been eating better, working out, and looking into all natural everything (also, ethical clothing!) Doing the capsule wardrobe has really opened up a wonderful new door that’s allowing me to transform my life.

That’s great Dani! I’m glad you are having a similar experience to me. I think when we have discipline we create space to think and in that space we can really figure out what’s important to us. Thanks for sharing!
