Spring 2018 Outfit 8: The Loose Capsule Wardrobe Model

Spring 2018 Outfit 8: The Loose Capsule Wardrobe Model Spring 2018 Outfit 8: The Loose Capsule Wardrobe Model

If you follow me on Instagramor if you pay close attention to my “what I actually wore” posts, then you’ll know that there have been a few late additions to my capsule wardrobe.

There’s a couple of reasons for that.

First, as someone who thrifts a majority of my clothing, I can’t rely on a traditional capsule wardrobe model where I only shop a few weeks before each season’s capsule.

To be a successful thrifter, you really do have to put in the time… especially when you’re as picky about what you purchase as I am.

Thankfully, thrifting is something I enjoy, and don’t mind doing frequently. I’m okay with the idea of items trickling in instead of doing one big “haul” four times a year.

I have a running list on my phone that I add to when I decide I’d like something and it helps me to stay on track so that I’m not just adding superfluous pieces to my wardrobe (like all of the amazing vintage 90’s heels I see all of the time, but have zero need for).

So yeah, I add things as I go, and it works really well for me and my lifestyle…

but it does complicate things because I share my capsules with you guys.

It would be nice if I could show you my capsule all finished and neatly wrapped with a bow, but it’s not going to happen.

Which leads me to my second reason for these late additions: I follow a loose capsule wardrobe model.

Obviously the pictures I show you stick entirely to the capsules I share with you, which shows you that you can stick to a predetermined amount of clothing if you want to. But the looser boundaries work better for me because of what I mentioned above and because the seasons here aren’t cut and dry.

And this is why I started the What I Actually Wore posts. During the week you get style inspiration from a set amount of predetermined clothes, and on Fridays you can see how it actually played out.

I’ve been thinking about this format I’ve been doing, and I’ve really enjoyed the benefit of having all of my photos shot beforehand. It does save me time in the long run and makes it easy to show you outfits everyday.

But I’ve been thinking lately that I miss the “real timeness” of sharing with you. I’ve also been toying around with going back to more lifestyle posts, and shifting the focus more to thrifting, sewing, and vintage style. Or in other words, focus less on the model and more on the method… does that make sense?

I’m not sure what I want to do yet, but these are just some thoughts I’ve been having. Now that Ella and Rosie are getting a bit older, it’s getting easier to fit more in, and the idea of taking photos/editing them on a daily basis is no longer overwhelming to me.

What do you guys think? Do you prefer these kinds of photos, or would you prefer more “in real life” type of photos. Also, would you be interested in some lifestyle and thrifting types of posts? Let me know in the comments! Your input really is super helpful to me.

I think I needed to ignore all outside voices for a bit to get back to a place I was happy with, but I’m now much more confident in my voice and therefore able to listen to opinions from a healthy place.

I guess things are always going to be changing in some way here at Truncation. It’s just my personality, and I’m not going to feel bad about it anymore. Thanks for sticking with me as I continue to figure things out!

Let me know what you’d like to see!

I think it could be an interesting experiment to look back at the end of the spring capsule and see how many of the ideal world, pre-shot outfits ended up in the what I actually wore file and how many didn’t make the cut with small kids underfoot and real life happening around you. Maybe there will even be some outfits that were riffs on the blogged styles, or ones that weren’t preconceived but still felt fantastic. I do a capsule wardrobe for myself, but I have a 6-yr-old and 2-yr-old to contend with. After 10 yrs of school mode pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees, I want to dress like the adult I’d like to be, but I struggle with also wanting to be practical for adventures with small children. I’m hoping that as they age I’ll be able to balance myself with my responsibilities more easily.

I can already tell that there is a difference! Though over the last three years I really have brought my wardrobe down to only including clothing that works for my lifestyle. I tend to err on the side of slightly overdressed, even with young kids underfoot. I’ve never been someone who dressed super casually if that makes sense.
