The End of My Fall Capsule

The End of My Fall Capsule

Well folks, another capsule has come and gone.

It’s weird for me to think that I’ve only been doing this for half a year because I feel like I’ve been doing it for years.

So much so, that I felt like an expert going into my fall capsule.  I know. The minute you start feeling like an expert is the moment you realize how much you still have to learn.

There were things about my fall capsule that I felt like I was doing SO right, when in actuality I was doing them SO wrong.

So. With that being said, here are the lessons I learned while doing my fall capsule:

1.

Just because someone (or the internet) tells you that you should have something included in your wardrobe doesn’t mean that you should.

What do I mean by that?

One word: color.

I mean don’t get me wrong, I love color as much as the next person.

But when it comes to my wardrobe? I really just don’t… unless it’s bright red.

I’ve always felt kind of bad about that and I often feel a subtle pressure to include color in my wardrobe.

In my fall capsule, I included colors and outfits that were only for the sake of having some extra color in my wardrobe.

I shouldn’t have.

I barely wore them and all they did was take up precious space in my limited wardrobe.

Not cool.

So in this next capsule I’m letting go of those expectations and doing things MY way.

No apologies.

2.

Just because I like a color or type of clothing, DOESN’T mean I should wear it.

I’m always so drawn to beige and cream, but, *sigh* it’s not the most flattering on me.

Same thing with any dress shape beside sheath. I just don’t love the way I look in them.

I’m finally letting go of the things that I like, but don’t like on me.

3.

I like tops that hide my hips a bit.

I was seriously lacking in longer tops in this past capsule and so I wore the same tops over and over.

I need to make sure I’m choosing clothing items that work for my body type instead of choosing things just because they are trendy.

4.

Finally, but most importantly: our wardrobes really are just a part of who we are.

They don’t define us, they don’t make us valuable, and most of all they don’t complete us.

They will never be the solution to our insecurities, our pain, or our inadequacies.

Until we can figure that out, we’re just like a bunch of hamsters spinning endlessly on our wheel of consumerism.

And I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to be a hamster.

Thanks for taking this journey with me! I’m so very excited to share my winter capsule with you on Friday. I think I’m finally figuring out how to create a wardrobe that really works for me and that’s exciting!

Until next time,

Love the recognition of the truly personal nature of a great wardrobe, Karin. I’m with you 100% on the color- I adore my cobalt heels but, past three, give me all the blacks and greys! And no matter how many French essentials demand I buy a trench..,meh. Great recap and looking forward to Friday!

It is SO personal isn’t it? It’s funny that I’m just now learning that. And i know what you mean about the trench… I have a trench and love it, but I feel that way about so many other things that I “should” have. I think it’s part of growing up when you start making style decisions for yourself instead of for others.

Love hearing about others experience doing capsule wardrobes. I am not sure I am ready for it yet, but it’s a great idea. LOVE the addition of you red shoes.

I know how you feel Melanie! It took me a long time to warm up to the idea. 🙂 And thank you! I wear them ALL the time!

Love all this great advice! It’s funny that you mention color because I cannot seem to find one blogger with a minimalist/capsule wardrobe that doesn’t stay away from lots of color. I LOVE colors and patterns in spring/summer (think Lilly Pulitzer), so I feel like a bit of an oddity in the capsule world. Moral of the story – embrace what makes you unique and be your own inspiration. Can’t wait to see your winter capsule!

I’ve noticed that as well Lauren! I think it makes sense though, because if you are drawn to a minimal aesthetic you’re more likely to be drawn to a minimal wardrobe. BUT I love to see capsules that have a lot of color so I say you do you! 🙂

Great wrap up! While I DO have color in my wardrobe, the majority of it is neutral. I get what you are saying though……I feel the same way about jewelry. No matter how fashionable it is to wear bigger statement pieces is rarely works for me. I own 1 statement piece that I wear for very formal events. The rest of the time I feel ridiculous in any thing but a simple necklace and earrings! Looking forward to seeing your winter capsule!

Thanks Rebecca! I TOTALLY get what you are saying about statement pieces. I own some, but I rarely ever wear them. I’m just so much more comfortable in simpler jewelry.

Love all the pictures of the outfits put together like this! You have such great style and it’s fun to look at. I really like the cream tunic so I think you might be wrong on your ability to pull it off. Curious as to how your winter wardrobe will be different. My winter wardrobe is basically identical to fall wardrobe save for the fact that there is a down coat involved :/.

Thanks Christen! It’s nice of you to say that about the tunic… maybe it’s just internal, but either way I just don’t love how I feel when I wear it. It’s a LOT different, but I think it’s only because I realized how much my fall wardrobe wasn’t working for me. Hopefully next year the two capsules will be a lot more similar. 🙂

I wish I could win a giveaway of every item in your capsule. 🙂 THAT would be awesome then I would just copy your outfits…because I am so clueless when it comes to fashion, but you always look so put together. 🙂

You’re so awesome for sharing this! I haven’t joined in planning capsule wardrobes but I love the idea of it and it’s something I’m thinking of trying in 2016. I love when bloggers like yourself share picture collages because it helps me see that the idea really is full of possibilities and I don’t have to get stuck in the same look every day.

Thank you Ashley! I definitely don’t feel like I’m lacking in outfit ideas with my capsule. Sometimes I even feel like my 40 items are a little too much. You’d be amazed at how much you really need!

I think everyone should dress according to their personal preference (though modest). I like longer shirts too. I must say that I love color, but it’s okay if others don’t. To each his own when it comes to fashion!

Love your style and #3 is me! I need to find a few new longer things!
