Establishing a Seasonal Capsule, Part 3

Cream Sweater Cream Sweater

Y’all (I don’t actually ever use that word, but I thought it would catch your attention), I SO wanted to like this sweater.  On paper it’s perfect. Easy, Neutral, Flattering. On me it’s so wrong.  Fussy, Not Flattering, and the color just doesn’t work on me. And here’s the rub: I was so close to not including it in my capsule.  The thing is, I had a Nordstrom gift card that I wanted to use and so I bought this even though I knew I didn’t love it.  I kept it anyway because it was filling a place holder that I mentally thought I needed.  Turns out, I didn’t need it and this photo shoot was the first time I’ve worn it all summer. This was a good lesson for me going forward, don’t put something in your capsule just because you feel like you should. Every piece should be something you love and feel good in, even if that means you break the capsule “rules”… (which are?). I’m a big proponent of not letting our mistakes cripple us.  Instead, choose to accept the lesson that your mistake teaches you and move onward.  So. Moving onward. Do any of you have pieces like this sweater that you regret?

Speaking of moving onward… let’s move onward into the good stuff: my final post about how I’m planning for my fall capsule. Here’s the thing. I am such a visual person and I love to have all of my organizational ducks in a row. Can I get an amen!? No? Just me? If I don’t have something entered into a spreadsheet or a list of some sort then my thoughts can’t materialize into actionable steps. With capsules, you really need to be able to visualize the whole so that you are creating a wardrobe that will work seamlessly together. In order to satisfy my insatiable desire to have my life neatly defined by lists (I realize I may have a problem), I created this document:

Now, keep in mind that this is a rough draft.  I am still playing around with what I want to include and exclude, but it SO helped me to organize.  Also, having everything listed out in categories allows me to make sure I am achieving balance in my capsule.  I didn’t do this for my first capsule and I already feel a difference in how this capsule is coming together. I am so, so, so excited to share it with you!  This first capsule has been so fun, but this next capsule is so much better than this summer capsule.  Eek!

Here’s the best part: I want you all to be able to have this capsule guide!  All I need you to do is to subscribe to my blog and it’s yours completely free!  You can subscribe in multiple locations on my site, but might I suggest the form at the bottom of this post? Once you have subscribed, you should receive an e-mail with a link to the document. Have fun with it!

Alright folks, this was a long one.  I really hope you enjoy this guide! Also, I hope I’m not Excel’s number one fan. Anyone else out there get excited about lists? If not, how do you plan for your capsules? Leave your tips in the comments below for those who aren’t list people.

Until next time,

I wish I was as organized as you, and I’m working on making list to be more productive! I like to make a visual on polyvore. Most of my clothes are from past seasons so I try to find similar pieces to create my capsule. It helps me see them all at once without having to make a mess and taking things out, then in, then out again.

That’s a great idea to create a board on polyvore! Especially because most of my clothes are from past seasons as well. I’ll have to look into doing that! That’s exactly why I created the guide though… it was more just for my own use and then I thought that it might help other people as well. I just really benefit from seeing everything listed out in categories so I know exactly how many clothing I have to play around with.
