30 Days of Summer Style Day 11: Little Black Dress

This dress feels like the antithesis to yesterday’s little white dress, but dare I say I like this one better (I don’t have to wear a bras with it!)?

This little black dress is the other dress I got from Love and Confuse to include in my summer capsule, and while the two dresses may look completely different at first glance they both filled a very similar hole in my wardrobe:

knee length dresses. I have a lot of midi and ankle length dresses, but I run so hot in the summer that even those sometimes are too much when the temps really start to heat up… and I knew with being pregnant I was going to wish for shorter lengths even more.

And after wearing shorts on Tuesday, I’ve realized that I prefer dresses 100%. Shorts are nice because they offer coverage if necessary, but I’ve had such bad acid reflux this pregnancy that the waistband on shorts really aggravates it.

Moral of the story? You’ll probably be seeing a lot more of this little black dress.

Having a capsule wardrobe for the summer has been really refreshing. This past spring I had felt myself slipping into the over consumption patterns of my past, and I knew I needed to reign it in. I’m one of those people who is like “I need short dresses, let me go out and buy ten of them!”

I was finding that my closet had become cluttered again, and I was returning to that familiar feeling of “I have nothing to wear!”

Now. Granted, I am pregnant so having nothing to wear was a little bit of a legitimate issue. But knowing that I was going to have to add some maternity appropriate pieces to my closet I made the intentional decision to do it through a capsule lens so that I wouldn’t go overboard with my purchases.

It’s been really refreshing. And it’s also been refreshing to take a step back and hold off on shopping until after this baby boy is born.

I’m learning that I have a pendulum personality where I swing from one direction to the other in the way that I do/execute things and now that I’m more aware of that part of me, I’m going to try to do a better job at putting intentional limitations on my habits.

I do think I’ll hold off on doing another capsule until I’m many months postpartum, but I’m going to be reflecting on what limitations I can put in place so that I keep my purchases to a minimum.

I used to follow a blogger, who no longer is blogging, but she did something closer to the French Five model and he would only add 2-4 pieces to her wardrobe each season.

I’m considering doing something similar, but I’m not quite sure yet what the right fit is for my personality/situation.

How do you guys put limitations on your spending? Do you have a set budget that you establish ahead of time? Do you keep your purchases to a specific number? Do you take intentional shopping breaks? I just saw on Renee’s blog that she’ll be doing an a shopping fast, and I’m excited to follow along. Let me know what you do in the comments below!
