Keri Russell is My Style Icon

Last week I shared the first post in my perfect capsule wardrobe series.

Today I wanted to share the second post: find your style icon.

This may seem like a really easy task. All you have to do is find a person with great style and voila! Right?!

Well… it might not be as easy as that.

Something I’ve learned over the past year is that there is a difference between appreciating someone’s style and having a style icon.

Let me explain:

Before I started doing my capsules I was really drawn to people like Melissa Cole of Ella Brooks Blog or Emily Maynard (I know… I’m rolling my OWN eyes).

Are you catching a theme here? Blonde, tan, big hair, and impeccable makeup. Obviously both of these ladies are gorgeous…

but you know what?

They’re style is so not me… and the thought of getting that made up every day is, frankly, exhausting.

You see I was mixing up my admiration for how lovely they both are for what’s actually attainable for “me”.

I mean sure, I can have blonde hair and get spray tans and wear fancier clothes… but because that didn’t represent who I truly am I never felt completely comfortable in my own skin.

I realized I was trying to be someone I wasn’t.

And around the time that I started realizing this I watched the movie Austenland… now here’s the part where I give you permission to laugh at me.

I watched that movie and fell in love with Keri Russell (it helped that we had the same I Love Mr. Darcy bag).

I started stalking her street style on Pinterest and I realized that her vibe is exactly what I want my vibe to be. She has this windswept, casual, hipster vibe that I just really resonate with.

She always looks cute, but it’s in a much less put together sort of way. And that makes sense for my lifestyle.

Finding Keri gave me the clarity that I needed to start putting together a wardrobe that I absolutely love and will get the most use out of.

And that’s why I encourage you to find a style icon.

Not so  you can look exactly like them and become their twin… but because it provides you with inspiration for your own wardrobe.

Because I don’t know about you, but I’m not someone who is able to figure out my own style without a little guidance.

What about you? Do you have a style icon? Let me know who it is in the comments below!

Until next time,

Couldn’t agree more, Karin! From styling ideas to identifying key pieces, having that inspo is SO helpful. Great pick with KR- love the side-braid homage. 😉 Emmanuelle Alt is my style hero.

I’d really love to start looking into a capsule wardrobe more. I know it can be an investment. But, I already buy limited clothes and have basics for nicer outfits for functions. My daily style is very similar to what you have on in your photos. Lovely photos btw.

I abso-frikkin-lutely love the name of your blog and the meaning behind it! Where did you get that inspiration from?
Well for now I do not have any style icon and I definitely need someone to help me with a bit of selecting the maternity clothes (that look good also considering I’m a working mom-to-be). Following your blog for ideas for after pregnancy though! 😛
    Any advice on maternity clothes?

I’m not really sure who my style icon is. I guess I have to give it more thought. But..I LOVE Keri Russell. I’ve loved her ever since Felicity and watch almost everything she does. She’s so pretty and it seems effortless.

That’s a great way of approaching your personal style! I love the idea of being inspired by an aesthetic rather than trying to recreate an exact image… I have no idea who my style icon would be so now I’m curious to give it some thought!

I used to think my style icon was Reese Witherspoon, but after reading this, I’m reconsidering. I like the preppy style, but I also like the simplicity of a casually put together preppy style wardrobe. I’m definitely not one to wear skirts on a regular basis. Thanks for the food for thought! I’m excited to dive in and discover my true style icon! 😀

First, I have to say that I love that Mr. Darcy bag! I just finished the process of cleaning out my wardrobe, but I still need to figure out who my style icons are before I really embark on my building my capsule wardrobe.

As soon as I read “Keri Russel” the first thing that popped into my head was Austenland and her style. It is so relaxed and cute. In other words- perfect!

Ok, so I totally don’t know who my style icon is. I need to look that up. It’s gotta be boho with lighter colored hair, and also casual. Boho, dressy, casual, feminine, but not glam, but sort of glam. How will I ever figure that out? hahaha.

Haha! That’s pretty specific… but maybe Hilary Duff??
