Staying Engaged with a Capsule Wardrobe

Staying Engaged with a Capsule Wardrobe Staying Engaged with a Capsule Wardrobe

These are some more pictures of our trip to Iowa a couple of weeks ago. My little sis just bought a unicycle and she makes it look so easy, but it’s not! Ha! I was able to sit on the unicycle and that was about it. David couldn’t do it either. So that means my sis has some mad unicycle talents.

I had a random thought the other day. But first let me back up. In college I worked as a therapist for autistic children. One of the tools that we used to keep the kids engaged was to keep groups of their toys in bins. Every month we would pull out a new bin and let them play with the contents. Even though they were toys that they had played with before, they still seemed fresh and exciting each new month. See where I’m going with this? I think Capsule Wardrobes have been so successful for me is that I’m a lot like those kids. It’s hard to stay engaged with clothing that I see day in and day out. Packing away each season’s clothing gives you a fresh perspective when you pull it out again and it’s so much easier to stay engaged with what you already own. Because of this, when you do add new items to the capsule, you aren’t buying things simply because you are bored with what you own.  Makes sense right?

What do you think? Do you find yourself more satisfied with what you own when you keep it out of sight for a time?

Until next time,

Absolutely, yes! I became so much more attached and satisfied with the pieces of clothing I already owned when I only saw them seasonally. I am even trying to replicate that same experience with other areas of my life – seasonal home decor, meals, and beauty products.

Thanks for commenting Lauren! Your idea to do seasonal beauty products is genius! I’m going to have to start doing that!

Loving your photos Oscar is soo cute, I have to admit to being someone who re-wears the same thing over and over. I am in awe of those who can ride a unicycle I just fall off them lol. x

In middle school I taught myself how to ride a unicycle – they’re hard! Also makes me laugh at what I did for fun with friends in middle school. And I love when I find something in my closet that I forgot I had!

I guess I’m an oddball. Mom always complained that I didn’t care what I wore, and I’m mostly still like that. I have a very, very, very basic wardrobe that I wear year-round.

With that said, I’m amazed at your sister’s unicycle skills! Not something I could do.

I just did my first capsule. And, pushed my dresses into the back of the closet and folded up what could be folded into a drawer. I hope everything is exciting when I pull it out for spring! I did a 45 piece fall and winter capsule together; because, we don’t have a ton of season change where in Cali.

That’s great Kathryn! I’m sure it will! I’m actually thinking about changing to two separate capsules instead of 4. One cold weather one and one warm weather one. We’ll see!

I think you are right. If you pack away clothes for the season you usually forget about an item or two when its time to get the tote back out. I need to try this!

Yup, this is me and my one-year-old to a T. πŸ™‚ I’ve been thinking about starting the capsule wardrobe thing for a while, and I can see that a few little tricks like this can make all the difference!

Love the idea of putting away each season of clothes and then revisiting. I just don’t know where I would store them. Lol

I love viewing clothes that way!!! That is the first argument for a capsule wardrobe that I think could apply to me! πŸ™‚
