Outdoorsy Capsule Wardrobe: Tips for How to Create On

As promised, may I present my outdoorsy capsule wardrobe. I know it may seem like a lot to have a workout capsule AND an outdoorsy capsule, but as as you can see from the collage, there are some things that just don’t overlap and I find that with the above pieces I’m pretty much set for most every adventure.

This is definitely one area where I will invest more money and so it has taken me many years to build it up to its current state. To me, outdoorsy clothes must be made well because I want to be able to get dirty and not worry about how they will hold up. And it’s worth it! I’ve had that North Face rain jacket for going on 11 years and it’s still doing great! And those Duck Boots are going on six and they are also holding up like a champ. In other words, I don’t want to have to replace these clothes every year… and you just can’t find that kind of quality in cheaper brands.

It was SO MUCH FUN to put this capsule together. Each piece has gone on so many special excursions with me and to be honest, I’m fairly attached to these clothes.  There’s just something about putting on the wool cardigan, or lacing the ties on my hiking boots that speaks of anticipation… it gets my heart racing knowing that I’m about to embark on an adventure and explore this beautiful earth.

This is where it’s at for me folks. I crave the thrill of discovery and the chance to spend time in nature. There are so many amazing things to explore and I don’t ever want to stop.

So cheers to discovery! May you never stop exploring.

Until next time,

  1. An outdoor capsule and a workout capsule are great ideas! I guess I sort of have those, too, without even trying; one drawer of each. After all the rain we have been getting out here in Virginia the last 10 days I have decided to invest in a rain coat so I will be checking out your recommendation. The rest of my pieces I have owned for years and love. I too, spend a little more on quality workout and hiking gear, but they last for years and years! I do find both workout and outdoor clothes find their way into my daily clothing choices whether it’s walking the dog, working out in the yard, or having a day of lounging around in my yoga pants! 🙂 I find myself more often wearing these pieces than my more fashionable clothes that hang in the closet. It’s funny how I don’t feel the need to replace them in favor of something new before they’ve worn out like I so often feel with the rest of my wardrobe. If only I could get to that mindset for all of my clothing! I am getting better…..but still have a long ways to go!

    1. That’s exactly what I have too Rebecca, one drawer of each. 🙂 You know, I also have just a regular rain coat that is REI brand that I really love! It is a gray trench coat design and I use it for everything that isn’t hiking and camping, etc. You might want to look into that one, because it’s made super well, but it’s also really cute! I also find myself doing the same thing with my workout and outdoorsy clothes… especially as a SAHM on the days when we don’t go anywhere. 🙂 And I totally agree with you about having that mindset on capsule clothing. Why is it easier to invest in certain kinds of clothes?? I haven’t figure that out yet.

  2. it is amazing that you have had your north face jacket for 11 years. I tend to misplace things within a year or too! I love this blog btw. Your photography is lovely!

    1. Thank you Justine! Well if it makes you feel better, I am on my 10th Nalgene bottle. 🙂 I go through those things so quickly because I am forever losing them!

  3. great shots and I love how colorful and functional all of your pieces are. Capsule wardrobes are so helpful, it makes dressing yourself fun and so much easier!

  4. Love this! I recently got into hiking and have quickly become obsessed. I am always looking for our next “Hike-cation” as we call them. I have started slowly collecting pieces for my new hobby too. I guess I am starting my own outdoorsy capsule wardrobe!

  5. I totally agree with you about investing in quality outfits for this kind of use as they will last far longer. Its great to pick up a jacket and remember the last time you were wearing it, especially if that was on an adventure somewhere fab 🙂
