My sister-in law started taking pictures at the beginning of this month. My brother-in-law was on kiddo duty while we did a whole bunch of outfit changes. These pictures were the final of the bunch and Kit had just had enough so she got to be a part of the final photo shoot. To my other mama readers out there… doesn’t it just melt your heart when your kiddos only want you when they are upset?
On a different note, I cannot believe that I am starting to think about my fall capsule. This summer has gone by so fast! I have learned so much so far and I’m really excited to give another season a go. I’m dusting off the old clothing bins this week and starting to look through my fall clothing. Honestly, I probably won’t be able to afford to buy that much so my plan is to look around at some of my favorite stores and then look for similar items on eBay and Thrift stores. You do what you have to do right? Here’s the thing, I know that there is a lot of talk about investing in higher quality pieces when doing capsule wardrobes and I definitely agree with that concept. However, I’m in no position to drop $500+ on a leather jacket so my “investing” will be a little more tame.
I definitely don’t judge anyone for paying whatever they want for quality pieces, I’m just trying to be real with you. Capsule wardrobes are supposed to free you from the burden that clothing can bring and so purchasing something just because it “should” be in your capsule (i.e. Burberry trench, Acne leather jacket, etc.) pretty much does the exact opposite right? I mean, don’t get me wrong, I would love to have those things, but if I ever do get them it will come after much saving. Enough on that. Would any of you like to see a post about my process for putting together my fall capsule? Let me know in the comments if you would! Also, for those of you who also have a limited budget, what are your secrets? Do you have any favorite inexpensive stores? Let me know!
Also, one last thing before you go, I want to give a quick shout out to this diaper bag from By Holm that I carry the heck out of. I just really love it… it’s huge and roomy, looks classy, and it’s waxed canvas so you can wipe it off (which is a major win). If you’re a mom, then you probably need this in your life. Plus the owner Anna is wonderful to work with! And we’re all about supporting women entrepreneur’s at Truncation right?!
Until next time,
I love TJ Maxx for budget shopping. Lots of times my TJ Maxx has Paige denim, Cloth & Stone, and Seven for Mankind at very reasonable prices. They also have Anthropology brands at times, too! I also do exactly what you do, find what I like in a store and buy it on eBay. Last spring I wanted a pair of Same Edelman booties, but I wasn’t prepared to plunk down $135 for them. I looked daily on eBay and after a couple a weeks a pair that had only been worn once came up in my size for $65. Score! I have used eBay to buy handbags, shoes, sweaters and even sometimes jeans. I also use eBay to sell items.
I would love to see your process on how you will put together your capsule for fall. 🙂 And your little girl is too cute! Her little legs and cheeks are adorable!
Thank you Rebecca! I will definitely check out TJ Maxx! I do Ebay quite a bit and Thredup. Have you heard of them? I’m looking for a new pair of boots so I will have to be more diligent about checking back on a regular basis. 🙂
Oh, let’s be honest – you could be wearing sweats with that little accessory – adorable!
By all means share the process, because budget is a LEGIT consideration around these parts, too. I would love (and have been on a multi-year quest for) a leather moto jacket, but unless I buy nothing else all year, it’s not going to happen. I have a number of older garments in need of repair and replacing and, well, a girl needs pants, after all! 🙂
I have two strategies here. One, I have one credit card that I use (BR/GAP/ON) because I can outfit myself and my kids there, and they give good (40%, even off sale) and regular discounts to cardholders, in addition to rewards. So good that I just replaced three pieces (Gap pencil skirt for work, BR tee and tank) for $15. Total. So that helps a LOT. (I also scope out Madewell on the regular so that I can pounce on their “sale on sale” offers!)
My new idea is to hit Nordstrom for a try-on session and figure out which higher-end brands work for me, and in which sizes. I’ve never taken real advantage of eBay/6pm/Hautelook/etc. because I don’t know the nicer brands and therefore it seemed too risky. But formalizing my capsule wardrobe has made me think a lot more about quality and sustainability, so if I can nab a pair of last season’s wash jeans on the cheap it’s worth the research. Can’t wait for fall!!!
Haha! Thank you!!
GREAT idea to try on the higher end brands on Nordstrom and then try to find them for cheaper elsewhere. Higher end jeans especially are so hard to figure out. I’m going to make a stop by Nordstrom soon! 🙂
Nordstrom Rack, Opitz Outlet on Excelsior, clearance racks at Banana. Also, I just discovered Eagan Outlets Sacks off 5th
I always forget about Nordstrom Rack! I’ll have to check out the Eagan Outlets Sacks… I’ve never been there. Thanks!
Love your blog and your honesty in this post! I jumped at this jacket a few weeks ago and its amazing quality for the price- maybe it fits your needs (link is http://www.luckybrand.com/major-moto-jacket/803049137016.html). Can’t wait to see how you thrift and sale your way into a wonderful fall capsule!
