Don’t Forget to Thank your Clothing

Don't Forget to Thank your Clothing Don't Forget to Thank your Clothing Don't Forget to Thank your Clothing Don't Forget to Thank your Clothing Don't Forget to Thank your ClothingDon't Forget to Thank your Clothing

So… I’ve been reading Marie Kondo’s book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up

I know. A Capsule Wardrober reading that book. How original. You must be shocked and amazed!

Okay I joke. I’m only half way through and to be honest I’m not finding it to be overwhelmingly useful. Though to be fair, I have always been a fairly organized person and am okay with throwing things out if they are no longer serving a purpose.

BUT, there is one thing that she talked about SO briefly that I thought was absolutely brilliant!

I’m talking about the section where she talks about thanking your clothing. Sounds a little odd right? Here is what she says:

When you come across something that you cannot part with, think carefully about its true purpose in your life. You’ll be surprised at how many of the things you possess have already fulfilled their role. By acknowledging their contribution and letting them go with gratitude, you will be able to truly put the things you own, and your life, in order. In the end, all that will remain are the things that you really treasure. To truly cherish the things that are important to you, you must first discard those that have outlived their purpose.”

I just really love that! I find it so hard to get rid of things sometimes because I regret that I can no longer use them.

But in this method, acknowledging that they are, in fact, a part of your story allows you to get rid of them with grace and gratitude.

How perfect is that?

Well. Speaking of moving on. Can you believe it’s almost time for me to change to my Winter Capsule?? I can’t.

I’m actually going to be making the switch next week, but I’m not going to share it with you until the first week of December.

Why?

Well, I have a few items I’m still thinking of getting, but I want to see if I can get them at a discount with all of the Black Friday sales going on. I’ll share it with you as soon as I have it all together.

And if you are in the midst of planning your winter capsules, don’t forget to subscribe so you can get my free capsule planning guide! I also include a bonus travel guide for those of you who will be traveling for the Holidays.

Alright… I feel like I just rambled at your for this entire blog post (I may or may not be watching Revenge on Netflix while I type this…#multitasking).

Until next time,

I love your blog so much. You’re very real, and relatable. I’ve been reading a ol of minimalist blogs over the past couple years, and yours is by far my favorite. I transitioned my Fall/Winter wardrobe into my closet on November 1st. I only have two capsule wardrobes, one for Fall/Winter and one for Spring/Summer. The weather where I’m at goes frim super hot to freezing in a matter of days here. It’s crazy!

Thank you Daphne! You have no idea how much it means to me to hear you say that. You are so kind. I’m actually kind of thinking that I am leaning towards only doing two capsules… it’s just a lot of work to do four! Ha!

I love the idea of thanking things before getting rid of them. I’m a recovering packrat and I hold on to too many things for silly sentimental reasons.

I think we all do that Susannah! Books are where I get stuck. I view them all as friends, so to think of getting rid of any of them breaks my heart! Ha!

I am so bad about not getting rid of stuff, ugh. I grew up with a grandmother, mother, and Aubt that hoard. Sadly, I think I have inherited it. I do try though. This was an inspiration. I can do this!

We all have our vices right Rhiannon? At least you can admit yours! 🙂 I wish I could join you with a glass of wine so we could go through everything together and laugh about all the things we hold onto needlessly.

I just asked for this book for Christmas, so I am really excited to see what else it has to say 🙂 And, Revenge is amazing! I was sad to finish it all, but it was a lovely end 🙂

That concept of Marie’s has been incredibly helpful for me in my journey to live with less – particularly in areas beyond my closet!

And I wanted to tell you how elegant and classic you look in these photos. I think the red lipstick and sunglasses are a big part of it, but you and your little one together in the fifth photo reminds me of all of the old family photos I’ve seen with my grandmothers, great-grandmothers and their babies. Your style is certainly classic, but that look of mama-love is timeless too! xo

I definitely think it will translate into other areas as well Erin! It’s such a great way to look at things. And thank you so much! I’m going to be honest… I was feeling very insecure about these photos for some reason and your words just blessed me beyond measure. You are so nice!

I know! It’s crazy! I saw that it’s supposed to be in the low 30’s this weekend for us so we may very well be getting snow soon too! And thank you! It was one of my better thrift finds! 🙂

What a wonderful thought — expressing gratitude towards our things before getting rid of them. I have held onto maternity clothes that I know I will never need again, mostly for sentimental reasons. Letting them go with grace and gratitude would be a great place to start in my close. And then someone else would get a chance to find them useful for a season. 🙂

I love that you said someone else would get a chance to find them useful Kelsey! I think that’s what makes releasing our clothes beautiful… it’s a chance to allow them to serve a purpose for someone else that they once served for us. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I’ve read Mari Kondos book as well and found it a very helpful idea to think about why I should say thank you to something. In that process I realize it has already served its purpose.
