The worst thing in the world is when you want to be playing, but mom makes you stop to take a picture.

Karin Rambo of truncationblog.com shares about why its okay to be an outfit repeater

Wow. I have no idea where the last couple of weeks went. I really don’t.

Between being gone for a week and a half (first in NYC and then to Iowa to visit my parents) and then both Kit and I getting sick, I feel as if we’ve been living in a bubble for two weeks.

We’re starting to surface though and I actually had enough energy to take these pictures for you guys… even though I’m wearing little to no makeup and existing on day four hair.

BUT! High fives for baby steps!

If you follow me on Instagram then you will be well aware of the fact that I have been wearing this outfit nonstop for the last couple of weeks. It’s easy, I know I like how I feel in it, and it’s comfortable. Just what I needed in the midst of all that craziness!

Before I started doing my capsule wardrobe, I hated the idea of outfit repeating. I didn’t like being seen in the same outfit and if I was going to wear something twice I made sure I always styled a piece differently. This was actually one of the main reasons I was a fashion over consumer… I always needed something new so I wasn’t seen wearing something twice.

Even in the capsule wardrobe community I hear a lot of chatter around the idea of accessories: “Just build up your accessory collection and then you won’t feel like you’re always wearing the same outfit!”

But lately I’ve been wondering… what’s so bad about outfit repeating?

I mean, when I’ve done it, I’ve never had a friend notice (or at least notice enough to comment on it).

So why is it such a taboo?

I honestly don’t have an answer to that question, which leads me to the conclusion that it doesn’t matter.

It doesn’t matter friends.

So going forward I’m going to proudly wear the same outfit whenever I want. Because in this crazy world there are much bigger fish to fry.

So there you have it. I’m a proud outfit repeater. What about you?

Until next time,

Absolutely love this! I constantly repeat outfits – no shame here.
I made a similar transition in the last years – from feeling pressure (from myself) to be constantly create new outfits to being completely at ease with wearing my unofficial uniform almost every single day.
    Keep rocking that cardigan!

There’s so much freedom in it isn’t there? WHY do we put that pressure on ourselves?!

I see you on Instagram, constantly working on ouse projects and now you also found time to shoot and write this – how do you do it!? And oh yes I’m a repeater too! And proud of it haha. But I feel ya it took some time to feel comfortable wearing the same thing over and over again. Truthfully nobody noticed. I think I used to wear a lot of the same outfits as well but now I’ve put way more thought into each item, so it looks (and feels!) a lot better.

*Raises hand* Definite outfit repeater here! Sometimes you just have an outfit that just works, and you can’t get enough of it. And I love the photo of your LO losing it over the picture. That is the story of my life with my daughter. Haha. πŸ˜‰

I agree! I repeat outfits so often it isn’t funny! My high school career consisted of uniforms, and by the time I was a Senior I wore only navy polos and khaki pants. No one ever said anything, and probably because they never noticed. Besides I don’t have a budget big enough to afford to never wear the same outfit twice.

I love that you mention the budget issue, because that is definitely something that plays a part in it. There are so many things we can be spending our money on than buying so many clothes so that we don’t outfit repeat!

Oh gosh if I didn’t repeat outfits I would never have anything to wear! I’m still definitely guilty of over consuming, but I have plenty of pieces that I love and will ALWAYS reach for them over and over.

Definitely! That’s why there’s so much freedom in it right? Because you allow yourself to wear the items you absolutely love!

I am definitely an outfit repeater! Sometimes I wonder if I repeat outfits a little too much, but like you, I know what I’m comfortable in and what I think makes me look good. Why not repeat that? πŸ™‚

ME! I basically built my intentional wardrobe to vary my repeat outfits: jeans and a tee shirt. So while I vary in color I’m basically wearing the same thing. Every. Day. #highfives

That’s exactly what I’m finding is the case for me too! T-shirts and jeans. I’m just trying to figure out how to vary my wardrobe based off of those items.

I had to the same experience these last few weeks, and yes,not only does it “not matter” as you say, I think it’s also empowering. When you’ve got other stuff going on, it’s so many minutes less of standing in front of the wardrobe in the morning, and if your best repeat outfit feels just right (which it does cause otherwise you wouldn’t be so happy to repeat it) then it’s like armour for the day: I know I can kick anything in my best denim dress.

(high-five) I am a proud outfit repeater too. If I feel amazing in something, I will wear it over and over again. It saves me time and brain space and if an outfit is a winner, then why would I not wear it?

I think that’s been my favorite thing about having a capsule! Giving myself the freedom to only wear what I love!

You are so right! No one notices when you wear the same outfit over and over. I basically stalk your Instagram (did I say that out loud?), and I didn’t notice at all. I’ve definitely noticed the suggestion of using lots of different accessories to spice up the same outfit. I have done the opposite and wear the same exact jewelry every day. I remember reading a couple years back about how the concept of not repeating an outfit is very American. In French movies, you will notice the main characters wearing the same outfits multiple times throughout the film. The only time we see this in American films is when a character is “down on their luck” or when the writers are trying to emphasis a negative quality. So it’s kind of engrained in us to want to always wear something different. But I’m glad you and so many others are fighting back as proud outfit repeaters!

Why fix something that isn’t broken? When you’re onto a good outfit repeat repeat repeat! I just change the shoes if I want a little variety. Love that shot of you and the little one πŸ™‚

I love that long cardigan! I’m notorious at repeating outfits. If I love an outfit, I will practically wear it to death! ~lol~ No shame in my game here. πŸ™‚
