Oh look, another white shirt. What a surprise! I am really proud of the fact that I’m wearing green shoes. I’ll be honest… these shoes have not gotten a lot of wears, but I’m still glad I included them in my capsule. They do offer a a certain pizzazz to an outfit without being totally over the top.
One thing I’ve been ruminating over lately is the question of why things like shopping only make me temporarily happy. Things that are worthy of our pursuit typically take time, effort, and sweat. They might require a skill to be honed or require us to study and learn new information. These things are often challenging. On the other hand, empty pursuits are easy and quick. We get a quick burst of accomplishment, but it dies down quickly because our lives weren’t actually enriched. The problem with this instant happiness is that it’s temporal. True, worthy happiness is something deeper. It is something that lasts because it is not dependent on circumstances and it cannot be shaken because it allows other emotions to coexist with it. When we experience this kind of happiness we don’t need that temporary moment to feel whole. It allows us to dig deep and pursue those more challenging things that will ultimately enrich our lives. I find that it is only when I experience this kind of happiness that I can go shopping with a clear mind and not because of an emotional trigger. What do you think? Are there things that you wish you were pursuing, but aren’t because of empty pursuits? Let me know in the comments below!
Until next time,
Such a great point Karin! I used to emotionally shop all the time. When I was lonely (my husband has done two tours overseas) or when I am stressed (hello online shopping!). But yes, I’d rather be satisfied on a deeper level and allow shopping to be more utilitarian, not theraputic.
Side note: oye, I am SO on the hunt for the right bag, and your tote makes me want one! I wish Madewell made there stuff in the USA. I have a bag by them though and love it!
I can’t imagine having your husband be on tour for so long! Anything that I am feeling emotional about doesn’t compare to that. But I do get the emotional “Fill” that shopping gives. I tend to do it when I’m going through life changes. 🙂 I do love my Madewell bag. If I find one similar that’s made in the USA, I’ll make sure to give you a heads up!
I used to emotionally shop all the time whenever I felt I needed to “treat myself”. Nowadays I try to better myself internally by living a life that makes me happy in the long run (working out, accomplishing more tasks at work, etc.) Love your blog! And Andrea, you should look at the totes at http://www.cuyana.com. They are made in the USA and are similar to this one. I’m saving some $ for the caramel one 🙂
Thank you Samantha! I love your idea of bettering yourself internally. I have also started “treating” myself with activities that restore my energy… Taking baths, reading, etc. And thanks for the tip on the bag. Their bags are gorgeous!
